How does plant identification work?
Plant identification has moved from thick dichotomous keys to instant image recognition. Here is what happens behind the scenes, both the old way and the new.
The traditional method: dichotomous keys
A botanical key asks a series of either/or questions — leaves opposite or alternate? flower parts in threes or fives? — that split the plant kingdom until one species remains. It is precise but slow and requires vocabulary most people do not have.
The modern method: AI image recognition
Vision models learn visual patterns from millions of labeled plant images.
When you upload a photo, the model analyzes features like leaf shape, venation, flower structure, and overall form, then matches them against learned patterns to propose the most likely species with a confidence score.
Why photo quality matters
- Sharp focus on a distinctive part (leaf or flower)
- Good, even lighting — avoid harsh shadows
- Fill the frame with the plant, not the background
- Multiple angles help confirm tricky look-alikes
